What is a Veterinary Technician?
Registered Veterinary Technicians (RVT) are a vital part of the veterinary health care team. Technicians do much more than just hold your pet for his physical exam. Veterinary technicians take x-rays, assist in surgery, perform dental cleanings, provide care to pets recovering from surgery, update medical records, perform laboratory tests, fill prescriptions and much, much more.
Requirements of a Registered Veterianry Technician

Associate’s degree
-
Pass the Veterinary Technician National Examination (VTNE) and in some cases
-
Continuing Education (CE) credits each year to maintain their license
Duties of a Registered Veterinary Technician include:
-
providing nursing care to pets that are hospitalized due to illness, injury or surgery
-
drawing blood and collecting other biological samples
-
taking vital signs and performing physical exams
-
giving injections – in the muscle, under the skin, or into a vein
-
placing and caring for IV catheters and administering fluids
-
taking and developing x-rays
-
calculating giving anesthetic drugs
-
monitoring pets under anesthesia and waking from anesthesia
-
assisting the veterinarian during surgery
-
sterilizing surgical instruments
-
performing dental cleanings
-
performing labwork such as blood chemistry, urinalysis, fecal flotations, and cytology
-
performing ECGs, ultrasounds and other tests
-
filling prescriptions
-
updating medical records
-
assisting with chemotherapy
-
educating pet owners on wellness care, disease prevention, disease treatment, surgical after-care and more
Veterinary technicians perform comparable duties to all the following human professions:

Veterinary Technicians cannot:

prescribe medication

diagnose or give a prognosis

perform surgery
